ROCK POOL invites the viewer into a space of quiet encounters, one that asks for attention, rewards stillness, and hopefully awakens a sense of awe for the hidden rhythms of the life all around us. From murky kelp forests to scallop burial grounds and a UV lit cosmic expanse, the non-narrative flow draws its audience through the circadian cycles that turn the worlds beneath our feet. As commonplace as they are alien, these cauldrons of primordial wonder are animated by an innovative experimental soundscape and seamless, layered montage.

A crime has been committed. The worst thing is murder... Who is the culprit? What are the motives for the crime? These and many related questions face police colonel Drobyshev and senior lieutenant Samarin. During the investigation, they encounter young people whose spiritual poverty is terrible in its moral consequences.

Pool is a melange of documentary and fiction, about its actors’ lives: a 14-year old girl, a Chilean exile, a French actress and an unfulfilled shoestore manager. No plot runs through it, but the characters all move in and out of their roles. When we get too close, we are reminded It’s only a movie. The young girl who appears at the beginning of the film is Ally Sheedy at fourteen. She has since appeared in many feature films including The Breakfast Club and High Art.
